Michigan: Taxed at the Pump, the Title, and the Tax Bill.

Michigan's economic burden: By the numbers
Starting January 2026, Michigan replaced its old fuel sales tax with a flat 52.4-cents-per-gallon tax, one of the highest gas tax rates in the country, on par with California and Washington. Built into the law: the rate automatically increases with inflation every year, specifically so lawmakers never have to hold another vote to raise it again.
Michigan's median home price has risen to roughly $275,000. Our future generations will have a higher hill to climb and accumulate mass amounts of debt to live free.
Michigan drivers pay some of the highest car insurance premiums in the nation — full coverage often exceeding $2,600 a year, a direct result of the state's unique no-fault insurance laws. It's a cost every driver is legally required to pay, whether they can afford it or not.
Michigan's effective property tax rate runs 1.28%, above the national average of 0.91%. Property taxes make up nearly 34% of all state and local taxes collected in Michigan, the single largest tax burden most families carry every year.
What's Driving It
Policy Failures

A Tax Increase Designed to Never Need a Vote Again
Michigan's new gas tax law didn't just raise rates once, it built in automatic annual increases tied to inflation, specifically so lawmakers never have to cast another public vote to raise it again. That's not stable policy. That's a government deciding in advance that future tax hikes shouldn't require accountability to voters, ever.

A No-Fault Insurance System That's Failed to Deliver Relief
Michigan reformed its no-fault auto insurance system in 2019, promising lower premiums for drivers. Years later, the state still has some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country. When a major reform doesn't deliver the relief it promised, that's not a one-time failure — it's an ongoing policy choice that leaders haven't been held accountable for fixing.

Rising Costs, No Real Plan From Lansing
Home prices, insurance premiums, gas taxes, and property tax burdens in Michigan all keep climbing, and there's been no serious statewide push to address the combined weight of these costs on working families. When affordability keeps slipping and no one in state leadership owns the full picture, residents are left to either accept it or organize and demand better themselves.
