That is St. Francis's effective property tax rate, the highest of any municipality in Milwaukee County, and more than double the national median of 1.02%. On a median home value of $234,500, that rate produces a meaningful annual tax burden for residents earning a median household income of $57,368, well below the national median. Growing the tax base through new development is the most direct path to easing that burden for every homeowner in the city.
That is how much St. Francis's population has shrunk since the 2020 census, falling from 9,161 to approximately 8,904 in 2026, with projections showing a continued annual decline of 0.57%. Reversing population loss requires giving people compelling reasons to choose St. Francis as their home. The development projects underway on the waterfront are a start. Retaining and attracting residents also requires a community that is actively engaged and invested in its own future.
